Antarctic Beech trees at Springbrook

The Springbrook plateau reaches about 3000 feet in height and has many unusual trees and plants. Marianne wanted to see the very rare Antarctic Beech trees.

More subtropical rainforest. It feels wonderful walking through it listening to the birds.

We came to the three antarctic beech trees. You can read more about them at this link.

They are approximately 2000 years old.

We continued another 50 yards to the 'Best of All Lookout'.

The lookout is right on the border between New South Wales and Queensland so what you are seeing here is NSW. To the right is Mt Warning which is the remaining plug from the Tweed Volcano that erupted 23 million years ago.

Looking toward the sea. It's a pity there was so much haze that day. Normally it is clear enough to see the lighthouse at Byron Bay some 40 miles away.

Mount Warning.

There is actually a fourth tree a few yards from the track that you can walk up to and touch.

We then drove to another lookout.

It overlooks a canyon.

Of course, there is a waterfall.

Climate change has put these forests at risk of bushfire. Two years ago, similar vegetation in the area burned which amazed everybody.
