Bergen to Oslo by train

After our two nights in Bergen we walked down to the train station to catch the 7:57 am train to Oslo. I had booked online and reserved seats on the north side of the train.

This is not the route the train takes but it gives you the idea.

Bergen suburbs. It really is a lovely city.

Bridge on the outskirts of Bergen.

Overcast with low cloud but not raining. The train window was very clean.

A small island in the fjord.

Waterfalls cascading down the steep mountain sides.

A cheerful looking small house.

The water was moving quickly.

This would be fun in your kayak.

Very low cloud.

More rapids.

The train continued to climb and eventually we reached snow again.

Many outside workers wear these yellow outer garments.

Frozen lake.

Snow barriers with the orange reflection of the lights of the carriage.

Altitude in feet.

I estimate that snow bank is about 10 feet high.

Finse is the highest point on the Norwegian rail system and access is only by rail. There are no roads leading to the village.

Frozen lake looking like it might thaw sometime.

This is the Dr. Holms Hotel which was established by the good doctor in 1909 so that his patients could breathe fresh mountain air. It is now a major ski resort.

The train headed down the hill and the snow gradually disappeared.

Down in the valley the snow was gone and it just looked warmer.

Some trees were budding or had leaves.

The cars looked like they were ready to race when the barriers were removed.

Spring time in Norway.

Most buildings in Norway are in good condition. It was a shock to see rusty old sheds.

A farmer out with his tractor.

An old wrecked shed.

The train trip is a bit over six hours long and it is spectacular. I was surprised that so many photos were reasonable enough to put in the blog since usually photos taken through a train window are absolutely terrible. However I did do a lot of cropping.

We arrived in Oslo to temperatures in the high sixties and lots of young ladies wearing bare legs, probably for the first time this year.
