Thurso to Ullapool

We enjoyed our rest day in Thurso but it was time to do the highlight of our trip, the drive around the North West coast of Scotland.

We had done the first part of the drive with our Whitby friends back in 2010 but this wetted our appetite to drive further west.

Initially the land is flat with the sea to the north.

Initially the road is two lanes wide but after a while it becomes one lane wide with passing spots. The road is very popular with tourists so progress is slow.

It's difficult to stop and take photos since there are few safe places to pull over. I suspect some of the pictures are out of order.

Plenty of gorse which is an invasive species on Scotland.

There were lots of bikers, cyclists and occasional walkers.

Heilam Lairg. The Best view of the day.

Smoo Cave.

After checking in at our hotel in Ullapool, we walked down to the wharf.

Unfortunately the water front street was being repaired so it was not too attractive.

The next morning a cruise ship had arrived.

A part of the menu at the hotel's restaurant. We would not have ordered the Caley. Actually the rest of the menu was one of the more varied we have encountered on the trip and the food was good.
