Ullapool to Achiltibuie

Marianne has a good friend in Seattle who spent some time in the 70's digging peat at Achiltibuie.
She was a teenager at the time and although she was staying with relatives, it must have been an amazing experience.

Naturally we had to go there.

Back into the hills again.

We were on a normal two-lane highway and then turned off onto this narrow road.

I don't know how this turned out yellow.

Back to normal. The peak at the right must have been popular with climbers since the car park at the base was crowded.

A passing place. There was more traffic than I expected but it was less crowded at noon when we returned.

Near the sea.

Getting close.

The box was leaning.

Fifty years ago, the locals were so impressed by the peat-digging skills that some young lady exhibited that they kept it to show to visitors.

And here we are.

I wonder what was here fifty years ago.

This, definitely!

A somewhat wonky gate.

Local shop.

Plenty of sheep.

Since there were mountains in the way, we had to return the way we came. It was an excellent trip that took about three hours, but there is still a lot of traffic which means constant pulling over at passing points.

I hope Lydia enjoys this blog. We really enjoyed the drive.
