Downtown Melbourne

On our second full day in Melbourne, we decided to do a trip to the city center.

Russell drove us to North Brighton station.

Inside the train.

We got out at Flinders Street station and wandered over to the south side of the Yarra River. The Melbourne skyline is unrecognizable from 50 years ago. The city now has the most skyscrapers in Australia.

Curious signs in front of the National Gallery of Victoria. The signs show the various birds walking.

The front of the Gallery. I liked to visit it 50 years ago and it was my introduction to the great painters.

I once heard Leonid Kogan play the violin here. Many considered him to be the best violinist of the 20th century.

I used to row down on the river here in 1973.

Although we were probably 50 years older than everybody else in this cafe, we still were cool and trendy.

Some of the best calamari I have ever eaten.

One of Melbourne's lanes now used for outdoor dining.

Marianne loves this building facade. Melbourne has the best downtown area in Australia. by far!

The roof of the reading room of the old library.

The room.

We took a long 50 minute tram ride back to the house.
