If you have ever heard Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, you may remember that he inserts Promenades between the music representing the Pictures. In this blog, we promenaded along Lennox Street, turned left at Churchill Street and then wandered along to Garden 1 in Elizabeth Street.
The house next to Garden 2. Obviously, they are not as keen gardeners as their neighbours.
The next house is quite unusual by Maryborough standards.
The house on the corner of Churchill and Lennox. That's a lovely verandah and the tree trunks are certainly impressive. In the afternoon, sitting on that verandah in the shade would be lovely.
They are huge trees.
Not all houses have been spiffied up.
Churchill Street ends at a viewpoint over the river.
When we drove into Maryborough, we noticed a lot of diffuse smoke. I suspected a cane fire where the farmer burns the undergrowth in the canefield prior to harvesting. I was correct and this canefield is on the other side of the river in a low-lying spot that is subject to flooding.
Making the best of the view. This is the wealthiest area of town where the houses overlook the river. They also have a better chance of a cooling breeze.
It's usually a quiet, placid tidal river, but not when it floods.
Shady trees provide such wonderful cooling in a hot climate. Maryborough is usually hotter in summer than where we live by the sea.
The entrance to Elizabeth Street. It's a street that most visitors don't know about but it is lovely.
Most houses in Maryborough have fences, but not as high as this one.
Vegetation just grows and grows in the sub-tropical climate.
This house basically follows the format of one of the typical Queenslander styles with a few alterations to make it different.
