Purlingbrook Falls

We decided to drive to Springbrook which is a plateau just to the west of the Gold Coast. The road up to the top is very windy but the journey is worthwhile because of the scenery at the top.

One of the features we like to visit is a waterfall. It's only a couple of hundred yards from the parking lot.

A fallen tree trunk.

Now you get an idea of the size.

The plateaus in the area are covered by subtropical rain forest.

After a short walk, we arrived at a lookout. There hasn't been much rain for a while so the waterfall is not very impressive. It's a different story after it has rained. In 1954, three feet of rain fell in a 24 hour period and Springbrook averages 10 feet of rain a year.

You may notice a path at the bottom of the falls.  You used to be able to walk behind the falls but you had to be careful which way the wind was blowing.

Viewing platform on the other side.

More of the lower path.

We started to walk to the other side.

Some of the trees are amazing.

One of the creeks that feeds the waterfall.

A simple walkway and bridge. When it rains heavily, the walkway floods.

If you follow the water you will go over the cliff. It's not quite Niagra Falls, but the result will be the same.

From the other viewing platform. Click here for a photo that will give you an idea of the falls after it has rained.

Looking down into the gorge. The bridge for the lower footpath is relatively new. The circuit is about 4 km long and involves climbing 265 steps which is too much for me now.

It is significantly cooler on the plateau which is why the vegetation is so lush.
