Since we are at the Gold Coast for 12 days, it is an opportunity to see various sites that we normally would not have time to see.
Along the coast of South East QLD are several sand islands, and the southernmost is South Stradbroke Island. There is a narrow channel between the Gold Coast and South Stradbroke known as the Spit. I had never been there before so this was my big opportunity.
We wended our way up there through dreadful traffic and it was good to get out of the car. Here you can see the southern tip of the island on the other side of the channel.
Looking inland towards Southport. It was one of those wonderful early spring days. Perfect one day, better the next!
We walked out along the groyne.
Sand is pumped from the south side of the entrance to the island on the north side.
Surfers Paradise in the distance. In the center is Q1, Australia's tallest building.
Zoom view of the beach on South Stradbroke.
The sand here is much finer than what we have at our beach in Urangan.
It's only 30 km (20 miles) back to where we are staying but it took us almost an hour to get back. All the traffic lights seemed to be red and there were a lot of them.
As my mother would say, 'A oncer'.
