Coastal Starlight - day 2

By the time we woke up, the train was over two hours late. After leaving Oakland, the train went to a special siding to attach an old private coach at the back. What should have been a five minute job somehow turned into something that took much longer.

So we were still in northern California when we woke instead of southern Oregon.

The countryside was still dry.

North of the Oregon border.

Wetlands near Klamath Falls.

The observation car. It was impossible to take photos from our compartment on the eastern side of the train because of the glare and the dust.

The train follows Upper Klamath Lake.

Lots of birds. Some would try to keep pace with the train.

A large solar farm.

We thought these might be Redwood trees.

It's still pretty dry in this area.

I presume these are ski slopes.

We were intrigued by the steep escarpment.

A bushfire giving off a lot of smoke.

Eventually, the smoke haze became quite strong.

Another lake. As they say about Oregon, trees and lakes.

We arrived at Eugene where we could get off to stretch our legs.

Bridges over the river.

Portland. Some foolish passengers had attempted to connect to the Empire Builder heading east. Since the train was over two hours late, the Empire Builder did not wait for them. If you travel on Amtrak or Via Rail in Canada, always leave a full day free if you are attempting to make a connection.

Our final photo from the journey. Our train arrived two hours late in Seattle, but I must say I really enjoyed it. It's as good as the Californian Zepher.

As usual, we had several long conversations in the dining car with fellow travellers. Everybody who takes one of these train journies is usally interesting.
